Song Review: Adam Lambert Questions Love, Demands More Than "Roses" on Latest 'Velvet' Single

   LOOK at that album cover!

We have waited five long years since the glamorous Adam Lambert dropped The Original High, his last proper full-length album.

Soon after that album release though, it appeared Lambert was clamoring to gift his devoted fan base with even more. In 2016, he shared credits with Laleh for “Welcome to the Show”, was creatively possessed by Freddie Mercury on “Two Fux”, went to church on “Feel Something” and relished being high and in love on both “New Eyes” and “Comin’ In Hot”.

That steady flow of new music eventually paved the way for Velvet: Side A last year, complete with career highs such as “Loverboy” and “Closer To You”. However, that was only half of a full vision. Set to hit shelves on March 20, Lambert finally announces the complete Velvet experience with the release of a brand new single.

“Roses” is another disco-funk number that doubles as Lambert’s third collaboration with Chic legend and guitarist Nile Rodgers, following “Shady” and “Lay Me Down”. As we enter a month normally reserved for romantic gestures and life-long commitments, the artist questions the concept of love and a partner’s ulterior motives.

As Rodgers provides some groovy guitar strings, Lambert delivers an uncharacteristically tame yet sultry vocal performance. “Roses” puts an empowering spin on the month of February. While most will unfortunately tear themselves down if they spend the cruel Valentine’s Day alone, the artist is confidently content with whatever fun comes his way.

While Lambert would certainly appreciate a promise of devotion from his significant other, he leaves the ball in their court. The glam rocker doesn’t have time to play love games. “And all that I got was roses, don't mean a thing without emotions,” he croons on the polished chorus. “Focus, cause I just needed your love, tonight, tonight, tonight.”

Through a mix of stern warnings and flirtatious innuendos, Lambert gets his desires across on the new single. “Roses” is all about taking control of the situation, demanding your worth, and remaining levelheaded throughout the process. You cannot always get what you want. Good thing Lambert has Rodgers by his side for some creative relief.

This Valentine’s Day, you better step up to Lambert with something more than store-bought flowers. You’ve been kindly warned.
