“I’ve Been Babying You”
(Gulp) What hell resided on the other end of that statement struck fear inside every muscle.
My strength-trainer, BZ, faced me with new resolve. Now that I was well away from my original hip-reflexor injury, he was determined to get me back where I was just before the injury in February.
Somehow, I had beautifully avoided burpees. This exercise is designed as a torcher device. I am certain it was created by an intensely unhappy individual who desired to make sure that everyone else is just as unhappy. (Yes, I jest!) Our workout group did burpees at the end of last summer but I was still doing the kindergarten version on a box. Then we took a break while he gave us new challenges. By the time, my group was on the floor jumping out, pushing up and jumping up…I was injured. (nasty injury done alone on a treadmill!)
“I want you on the floor,” said BZ. It was not a request. But?
“You can do it…get down.” I laid there with flashbacks of when I first began almost to this day a year ago. I laid on the floor arguing with BZ as to why I would never be able to do a pushup. He hit the floor and said, “What are you going to do if you fall, Pam? What if you are alone? How will you get up? Now, push up off this floor.”
That day, one simple push up took all of my energy…but I did it. Push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups had never been done before in my life…but I do a version of them now (as I turn 61) and have for one year.
Back to the baby-ing….it took a long time on the floor, and my group cheering me on…but I did a modified, slow burpee ( five times)…then I practically passed out.
Sometimes, when we make the courageous decision to carry the I MATTER sign, we must face moments of sucking it up, doing what's hard and going forward. I could use age as an excuse not to do what BZ instructs, but I would sit in a chair, age faster, and be ultimately quite miserable. We must challenge ourselves and move forward in order to feel and live at our best!! My body feels so much better than it did when I began a year ago...I still don't love working out, but I do love the results....even if I have to do the dreaded burpee!
