The pink princess, Jeffree Star, has been teasing devoted fans with news of a second full length album for some time now, with the release of catchy singles including "Prom Night" and "Legs Up", but it seems the wheels are starting to move a bit faster towards Concealer as the Konvict artist has just released his latest dark-pop single, "Love To My Cobain", a track about an unstable relationship becoming a rather unhealthy obsession. While the new, uptempo dance track is traditional Star in terms of songwriting, the song keeps pushing the once "vulgar horror pop" connoisseur towards a different, radio-friendly sound and image. Unleashed to iTunes today, the new single is keeping talks of an upcoming album, produced by legendary Akon, afloat.
"Love To My Cobain", referencing one of his beloved lost idols Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, describes an unhealthy addiction to the person who may be running your life straight into the ground. "You are the pin in my grenade, can't pull you away", Star sings just before a heavy, EDM-inspired breakdown approaches. The deep vocals are consistent with ones fans and critics have been hearing with the artist's past few releases, fitting in with the somber subject matter. Star has always been one to paint a dark picture with his music and that definitely does not change in 2013.
People may see the new single as a hit or miss for the ever-evolving, head-turning artist. Yes, "Love To My Cobain" has catchy production, but unfortunately, at times, it becomes too much, overpowering Star and his vocal performance. The highlight is the lyrical content found on the honest verses. When the chorus comes up, it stays lodged in your mind, but a couple of amateurish mistakes, "lick my delicious" and extending the word" again", keep it from being a spectacular creation. As a huge fan of Star, the new single was an anticipated release, as is the upcoming music video and the new album, I just don't know if it will get as many plays as some of his past work currently in my catalog.
